“The store, according to the company’s publicity material, takes its name from the Ruehl family, who moved from Germany in the mid-1800′s and opened a leather goods emporium at 925 Greenwich Street in Manhattan. Abercrombie bought the rights to the name from the family in 2002.

Or so goes the corporate fable. Although the labels on all the clothes read “Ruehl No. 925 Greenwich Street, New York, NY,” there was no Ruehl family. There is no Ruehl store in New York City, and there is no 925 Greenwich Street. (Greenwich Street ends in the 800′s.)..

Bunny boiler

Meaning: An obsessive and dangerous female, in pursuit of a lover who has spurned her.

Origin: From the 1987 film Fatal Attraction, written by James Dearden and Nicholas Meyer. The plot concerns a woman scorned, Alex Forrest – played by Glenn Close, who obsessively pursues her ex-lover, Dan Gallagher – played by Michael Douglas. The phrase comes from the plot device where Forrest boils Gallagher’s daughter’s pet rabbit.

Gallacher’s suspicions should have become aroused at Forrest’s line when trying to persuade him to meet her – “Bring the dog, I love animals… I’m a great cook.”

The bunny boiler phrase, taking the lead from the film, was first used to refer to someone who is unable to remain rational at the end of a romantic relationship. Very quickly that became moderated and used, with some degree of irony, in much less extreme situations. Any needy, mildly possessive or even just annoying woman is now liable to be described as a ‘bunny boiler’.

As this is a recent phrase with such a clear origin it is interesting to trace who coined it and how it has found its way into popular use. The epithet isn’t used in the film itself, nor any of the advertising blurb used to promote it. As to who coined it, I don’t know. The first use of it in print is from an interview for the US magazine the Ladies’ Home Journal, by Close herself, reported in the Dallas Morning News, 6th December 1990:

“There’s nothing like portraying a psychopathic bunny-boiler to boost one’s self-esteem, Glenn Close tells Ladies’ Home Journal.”

Popular phrases that have emerged as street slang since 1981 have quickly become used in Internet discussion groups and tabloid newspapers.

What is Devil’s Claw?

Devil’s claw is a plant native to southern Africa. Its name comes from the small hooks on the plant’s fruit. The active ingredients in devil’s claw are believed to be iridoid glycosides called harpagosides, which are found in the secondary root.

Most of the world’s supply of devil’s claw comes from Namibia, with lesser amounts coming from South Africa and Botswana.

 

Why do people use devil’s claw?

Devil’s claw has been used for thousands of years in Africa for fever, rheumatoid arthritis, skin conditions, and conditions involving the gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidneys.

In the early 1900′s, devil’s claw was brought to Europe. It is used to improve digestion, as the bitter taste of devil’s claw tea is thought to stimulate digestive juices.

However, the primary use of devil’s claw today is for conditions that cause inflammation and pain:

·         Back pain

·         Neck pain

·         Rheumatoid arthritis

·         Osteoarthritis

·         Tendinitis

According to a study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, sales of devil’s claw in Germany were estimated to be $30 million euros in 2001, accounting for 74% of the prescriptions for rheumatism.

What research has been done on devil’s claw?

There is some evidence for the use of devil’s claw, however one larger, randomized controlled trial found only a modest benefit.

 

Common doses

Devil’s claw comes in capsule, tincture, and tea form.

For inflammation and pain, devil’s claw is usually taken in capsule form. Based on the research, a daily dose of devil’s claw should provide at least 50 mg of harpagosides per day (the amount of harpagosides in each devil’s claw should be indicated on the bottle).

For indigestion and appetite loss, a tea is made by steeping 1 teaspoon of chopped or powdered dry root in 2 cups of boiling water for at least 20 minutes. It is then strained and cooled.

The Settlers of Catan

Settlers of Catan is a multiplayer board game designed by Klaus Teuber. It was first published in 1995 in Germany by Franckh-Kosmos Verlags-GmbH & Co. (Kosmos) under the name Die Siedler von Catan.

Settlers was the first German-style board game to achieve popularity outside Europe, and has been called the “killer app” of designer board games.[1] Over 11 million games in the Catan series have been sold,[2] and the game has been translated into twenty-five languages from the original German.[3] The game has rapidly become popular in part because its mechanics are relatively simple, while its dynamics are quite complex.[4] The game is well suited for family play, since no one gets eliminated, and players who are behind can strive towards goals that are within their reach.

The standard game and its many expansions are available from Mayfair Games in the United States and United Kingdom, from Capcom in Japan, Kosmos and 999 Games in the European Union, Κάισσα in Greece (Οι άποικοι του Κατάν), Devir in Spain, Portugal and Latin America, and Strategy Games in Canada.
