FINISH CLASSES – then off to BALI! AUG 18-SEPT 8
Story behind it: Probably one of the more spontaneous things I’ve done…
I realized i had 3 weeks of vacation. Where to go though? Posted it on fb and 1st reply back was Jeff’s “meet me in bali, i’ll be there all of august.!” (mon afternoon 4pm)…considering I was mentally checked out for summer already I called my mom to ask “what she thought of bali” “its beautiful, why?” which I took as a “you can go.”
Then came the logistics…WTF am I gonna go there and how long am I going for? The former was more due to fact that I didn’t know anyone in the country after Aug 27. The answer ended up being: “You’ll figure it out.”-JH *Shrugs* Sure why not?
Woke up 8am Wed to cram for my exam, but instead looked up flights. The roomies stopped me from buying the flight until I came back from my final. Within 48 hrs I had something to look forward to in August.
Unrefundable ticket… Figured the rents would be pissed due to lack of discussing it. Dad called me up “so I heard ur going to indonesia.” which was the entire conversation. Then my mom ended up saying: “I hope ur not skipping school to go.” (I’m not) “I also think the amazon would be a great place to go..” (Mom isn’t that dangerous?) “It will would be a lot of fun and Ive always wanted to go to Russia too. L you aren’t very exciting.” (Uhhh k)
Plans for Bali?
Aug 20-27

Learn to surf, use the diving certificate to the fullest, SKY DIVE (looked it up…cheaper then in swiss).
Probably eat everything in sight…RELAX!! no ADDing I promised. >_<
Aug 28-Sept 7

Left alone to explore the place. Making a few buddies thru CS and gonna meet up with them. I’ll take some surfing lessons, trekking tours, see temples, rice paddies, etc. If I get really bored Ill fly out to another country or island. (sorry jono..OZ is a bit pricey!)
Oh yea..make it back alive. I have a red eye back from LAX and will be back in AA 3-4 hrs before my first class.
I first heard about this while at Uppsala last year and thought it was a done deal…apparently not.
Last year Karl Helge Hampus Svensson, a medical student at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, was expelled on a technicality once it came into light that he falsifited his records and was a convicted murder. However Svensson is now enrolled in yet another medical school (Uppsala). I think it’s great that Sweden (and Swedes) firmly believe and practice giving second chances but I personally think this is a bit much. Esp. since someone else could have taken his place at Uppsala (and for that at Karolinska).
1. What is a semla?
It’s a cream bun native to Sweden and Finland.
2. Why is everyone banging on about them today?
Because they are traditionally eaten on Shrove Tuesday.
3. You mean Pancake Tuesday or Mardi Gras?
Yes, but the day before the start of the Christian season of Lent is called Fat Tuesday in Sweden.
4. So what’s in these semla things?
A modern semla is a wheat bun, spiced with cardamom. The top is knocked off and the bun is hollowed out a bit to make room for almond paste and whipped cream.
5. So the top is just thrown away?
No, it’s popped back on and sprinkled with icing sugar.
6. And then you just pick it up and eat it.
You can. But a lot of people prefer to put it in a bowl of hot milk and eat it with a spoon.
7. Sounds like a Lenten fast would be well-advised after eating one of these monstrosities.
Definitely. King Adolf Frederick famously died in 1771 after eating 14 of them for dessert.
8. Do people only eat them on Shrove Tuesday?
No. The semla season has been lengthening ever since Luther lost his grip on the country. You’re likely to spot them in many bakeries for the entire first half of the year. Swedes eat 40 million of them per season.
9. Where does the name semla come from anyway?
From the Latin semilia, meaning top notch wheat flour. But southern Swedes refer to them as shrovetide buns.
10. All this talk is making me hungry. Where can I get one?
Sweden but only until Easter

And as yummy as they are, semlas can be quite deadly. Semla was King Adolf Frederick’s favorite dessert and he died February 12, 1771 after eating 14 semlas with bowls of hot milk. However the King was prob. not the most healthy of individuals as his last meal also consisted of lobster, caviar, sauerkruat, smoked herring and champagne….remember, always eat your vegetables!

Commentary: Very nice place to meet up during a break, amazing hot chocolate, and a great assortment of dark chocolate (which the staff is knowledge about. Found out about the hot chocolate thru a Tufts Alumni who made me bring him back a bag since he thought it was so nostalgic. Did I mention there are chocolate mice?

hrm L’s favorite going out place in NYC besides Lotus (for totally different reasons). Spent NYE 2007 there and went on a few other occasions. Always had a great time here, great music, dancing the night away, and you probably need bottle service (2 bottles 9 people? not bad BR). They pretty much leave celebrities (unless you are sitting on someone’s coat and we want it back) and NFL (HAHA…OSU alumni in NFL we did not leave him alone. GO BLUE!).
Thalassa 179 Franklin St
New York, NY 10013

“A Tribeca hot spot which serves rare seafood and organic produce.”
Comment: the food and wine was great there! I’m bias towards seafood though. All of us enjoyed our meal, the desserts, the service, etc. Probably one of the most underrated places in NYC. Seafood Thalassa main course and the Filet Mignon was great. We ordered like 4-5 desserts and all were good and unique.
